We have all been there. Running to catch a train – counting the seconds. Will you make the connection in time? The good news is that a team of innovative engineers located in Derby, UK are developing a solution. Meet goJoe the new mobile app that is going to change the way you travel on trains. Armed with goJoe, travelers will be able to find and reserve the seat they want, check their connections, receive recommendations on upcoming transfers and even alert train staff to emergencies – all from their mobile phone.
goJoe is a single app that will connect the passenger, the operator and the train
says Benjamin Parry, Project Lead with Bombardier. “It’s a digital product which can be paired with trains to provide a next-generation passenger experience. You can use it to access your trip from anywhere and it helps you find the perfect seat on the perfect ride.”
This clever new app is the result of thousands of caffeine-fueled hours writing code but behind the scenes is a smart-train, demonstrated by a single BOMBARDIER ELECTROSTAR car that has been equipped with the latest sensor technologies, advanced algorithms and an array of displays.
James O’Sullivan, Technical Lead of the project explains, “When a passenger uses the app to reserve a seat, a green light over the seat switches to red – saving your spot and letting everyone else know that they need to look somewhere else. The seats’ embedded sensors can even tell the difference between a heavy bag and a person – so there is no cheating with goJoe.”
goJoe lets you relax and enjoy the ride
But goJoe will take travelers far beyond seat reservations. The app also features a reporting tool that passengers can use to communicate with the operator. Info about things like the state of bathrooms or a broken air conditioner can all be quickly and easily communicated to the operator so they know exactly what and where the issue is.
Rail operators will love goJoe too because passenger feedback will let them identify patterns and improve services.
Parry’s pride in his team’s innovation shows, “goJoe lets you relax and enjoy the ride. It sends you an alert letting you know when your stop is coming and in case of a delay or cancellation, the app can even scan the train schedules and recommend an alternative route – train number, platform, car, seat, departure and arrival time – everything. goJoe puts all of this in the palm of your hand.” What are the most popular seats? Which trains tend to need extra cleaning staff?
The goJoe system has already completed initial testing, receiving early feedback from real passengers and selected customers. Keep an eye out for the technology making its debut in 2018 – It’s all a part of Bombardier’s strategy to leverage the power of digitalization and data top provide passengers and operators a next-level experience from point A to point B. So next time you go, why not goJoe?
